Water & SanitationResponsive image

It is often said: “Water is life.” There is much truth to that statement. Unfortunately, many across the world do not have access to clean drinking water. They have zero, or very poor sanitation services. KMI is working to alleviate that problem. We sponsor wells, rain collection projects, Drainage projects, and latrine construction.

Wells & Well Repair

Responsive image

Wells are expensive. They cost from $2,500 to $10,000, with an average of about $6,000 per well, depending on the access, the well depth, and the availability of materials to bring the water up once the well is drilled. We cannot put a price on life. Clean water eliminates many of the waterborne diseases and maladies that people get from drinking dirty brown river water. In 2017 KMI was gifted with enough funds for:

  • 3 complete well refurbishes
  • 2 new wells
  • 4 Hydrology reports finding sites for 4 new wells
  • As of 2020, KMI has now drilled 8 wells in the region
  • The goal for 2021 is to train a local well repair person*

*From time to time, things go wrong with the hand pumps in the bore-hole wells. When that happens, we hire a well repairman to come and refurbish the working parts of the pump. As noted, one of the goals KMI has set for 2021 is to train a local person in the vocation of well repair

Rainwater Collection

At KMI we love rainwater collections projects. They are relatively simple and inexpensive when compared to a well. But there needs to be a building in place before rainwater can be collected from the roof.

So far, KMI has put up two such systems, and they are loved by the local people. We see to it that the water collection tanks are chlorinated on a regular basis to prevent trouble from water-born diseases within the system.

Latrines

In the remote areas of third world countries there often are poor or zero latrine facilities. When requested to do so by village leaders, we work side-by-side with the local villagers to build adequate latrines. There are many types of latrines: pit latrines, arborloo latrines, composting latrines, and other varieties. Often, the most simple and functional latrines to build are the pit latrines. They are especially useful in areas where a pumping service is available to empty out the pits as they become filled. So far, KMI has sponsored the construction of eight pit latrines, and four arborloo latrines.
